According to the American Institute of Stress, the top life events for causing extreme stress are:
- Death of a Spouse
- Divorce
- Marital Separation
- Detention in Jail

- Serious Illness
- Marriage
The effects of stress on a person can be very serious, sometimes causing physical and mental breakdowns. We believe that mediation often reduces the stress involved in separation and divorce, in fact we see it on a daily basis. However, even when a mediation goes well there are some components of the experience that produce stress on both sides.
WebMD says stress can exacerbate mental and physical health problems such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, heart attacks, and stroke.
It’s important to take time to consider your health when going through a divorce and to do everything you can to protect your body, mind, and soul.
Here are a few tips to keep you healthy through any trying time in your life:
Reduce Alcohol Consumption – You may be tempted to drink but the numbing effect is only temporary. Excessive use of alcohol or drugs will actually dull your thinking at a time when you need to stay sharp.
Exercise – Getting out in the fresh air will help your body and clear your mind. It’s not healthy to sit and obsess about your problems and the issues you’re going through. Yoga is a great way to lower stress.
See a Doctor – Have a general checkup and make sure your blood pressure, heart rate, and other vital signs are not out of line. Listen to your doctor’s advice.
Eat Right – Stress can cause many people to binge on unhealthy foods. Resist this and eat good food including fruits and vegetables. Cut down on coffee and drink water or natural juices. You’ll feel better.
Remember that “this, too shall pass” and life will go on after your divorce. Keep a positive attitude, that is very important.
